Culture trumps strategy every time

Digital Transformation is all the rage these days – as businesses try and deliver customer centric value to the market quicker than their competitors. However, it is often done without consideration for the cultural impact of these changes to your business.

Not what – Why

When building a new product - too often it is easier to start with What, When and How rather than the Why.

Time to stop saying "Fr-Agile"

A few years back when we were all caught up in the Agile euphoria, the phrase “Fr-Agile” was coined to describe projects where Waterfall and Agile delivery were combined. This was initially called “W-Agile”, but then some bright spark said “don’t you mean “Fr-Agile!”. We all laughed, nodded and agreed that combining the two was a recipe for disaster – the worst of both worlds. However, a few years on and the world is changing. Fr-Agile may well be the best answer for many organisations.

A tax system for the digital age is needed

If the UK government really wants to be digital, it needs to transform how it taxes businesses today. Without this many long-standing businesses selling viable products will be forced out of business leaving foreign based digital companies to thrive, with jobs and tax receipts dwindling.

Agile Coach is a 'Transformative Role'

You're not in Silicon Valley. So what!

When I talk to clients about what ‘digital’ means to them and their business one of the most common responses I hear is “we are not silicon valley”. When I probe into what they mean by that I typically get something like “we are not like Amazon. We are not a start-up. We are not a tech company. We have legacy system. Our business doesn’t work like that.” So here’s my rant in response.

Time to stop calling it IT

IT was the name given the technology department back when people wanted to make the point that the department was not simply about the ‘tin’ – it was about the processing and provision of information such as HR and finance data. However, since then the world has moved on and the moniker of IT is no longer useful. Increasingly IT departments are rebranding themselves and with good cause.

Digital Transformation Part 2 – Where to start?

In part 1 we talked about how digital transformation is about a complete operating model change for a company. We ran through how the change is focused on building a business which can succeed in today’s digital age. This is not a small ask, particularly for long-standing businesses who may be required to change things which have (and could still be) making them successful. So where to start and how to know what should change? Here’s one approach which could be used.

Digital Transformation Part 1 – What is it?

Digital transformation is about transforming an organisation so that it can succeed in today’s digital age. The mistake many make is in thinking it is about just one thing like building digital products, or adopting Agile, or making use of digital channels. In truth it is about all these things and more. Digital transformation is about transforming the whole business, including how the company thinks, acts, operates and competes.
